Cow Facts
What are cows like?
Cows are gentle and friendly animals who love to be outside and graze on grass. Cows have big eyes and ears that convey how they’re feeling and often like to be petted and brushed. They are very social and enjoy spending time with their cow friends. Cows can even recognize and remember people and other cows they’ve met before! Cows need plenty of space to roam and enjoy their natural behaviors, like munching on fresh grass and lounging in the sun.
Where do cows live?
Cows are found on every continent except Antarctica, where it is too cold for cows to thrive. Cows have spread around the globe mainly because humans brought them along as they traveled and settled in new places.
What problems do cows face?
When cows are raised for their milk and to be eaten, mostly on huge factory farms, they experience a lot of pain and suffering. They often get sick because they are not allowed to spend time outside and are fed lots of grains, which aren’t their natural diet. Many cows are kept in small stalls where they can barely move and can’t interact with each other even though they are highly social. They are separated from their babies when they’re still very young. Cows do not get to live as long as they would if they were left to be free in nature.
How can you help give cows a better life?
To help protect cows, you can eat less beef and dairy–or stop eating them altogether–and choose foods made from plants instead, like almond milk and veggie burgers. A parent or guardian can also help you support the PLANT Act, which would help support the growth of plant-based foods.
