Tiger Facts
What are tigers like?
Tigers are powerful and beautiful animals—they are the largest wild cats and are very good at climbing trees and swimming in water. Tigers live alone in the wild and like to explore their big, natural homes. They have strong, sharp claws and can run very fast to catch their food. Even though they are fierce hunters, tigers also enjoy relaxing and playing in their habitats. Tigers need lots of space to roam and a healthy environment to stay safe and happy.
Where do tigers live?
Tigers are mainly found in India, with more populations in Russia, China, and Southeast Asia. The map shows where tigers naturally live.
What problems do tigers face?
Unfortunately, many tigers are taken from their large, open homes in the wild, separated from their babies and family members, and kept by humans in unnatural, enclosed environments, like zoos and circuses. In these places, they are sometimes forced to perform tricks and take photos with humans, which is very stressful for tigers. Tigers are also hunted for their fur and body parts. Some people even keep tigers as “pets.” Tigers are also losing their homes in the wild as people move into their habitats.
Because of these factors, tigers are endangered and on the brink of extinction.
How can you help give tigers a better life?
You can skip visiting zoos or circuses that keep tigers in captivity, never take a photo touching or standing close to a captive tiger, and, with your parent or guardian, learn how to be a wildlife-friendly traveler.
