Here’s what my days working to create a more sustainable food system look like.
I feel privileged to work in a field and in an organization that allow me to channel my passion for helping animals into action on a day-to-day basis.
Between spending time with my son ahead of daycare drop-off, participating in calls with dedicated colleagues and coalition partners, and advancing our meat reduction and farmed animal welfare initiatives, my days are never dull.
In my role as one of two Farming Campaign Managers, I especially appreciate being able to further our mission from different exciting angles.
For example, I could be giving out free plant-based sandwiches in Washington, DC with teammates one day and mobilizing the public to demand plant-based chicken at Popeyes the next.
I dedicate time daily to planning and implementing activities that make sustainable and humane plant-based foods more accessible. This often inspires me to whip up quick and delicious plant-based lunches, such as a “Chickpea of the Sea Sandwich” (the recipe for which can be found in our Meating Halfway guide).
A significant part of my day currently is spent strategizing creative tactics to help move Popeyes toward announcing a meat-free menu addition. Stay tuned for offline activities that will be deployed next month that are sure to capture the chain’s attention (and if you’re in New York or New Orleans, you may just see some of these in person)!
On any given day I may be meeting with food companies and brands to discuss their plans to reduce animal suffering in their supply chains and increase their plant-based options. This effort will culminate in a public scorecard of top restaurant chains launching later this year.
Although my role is energizing, I often find myself overwhelmed with sadness at the scale of suffering experienced by the billions of sentient beings trapped in factory farms. In those moments of downheartedness, I remind myself that there are thousands of passionate activists and supporters (like you) ardently working to transform our food system and end animal abuse once and for all.
At the end of the day, on my way to picking up my son from daycare, I am proud and confident that together, we are creating a better world for animals, the environment, and future generations to come.
