The backbone of our work for bears being used for entertainment has always been our ability to rescue bears and house them in sanctuaries where they can be given the best possible care for the rest of their lives
Since 2010, our partner, the Balkasar sanctuary in Pakistan, has provided care to bears surrendered from cruel baiting and dancing practices.
Through the reputation of the sanctuary and the wonderful staff that work there, Balkasar has served as an example of the natural environment bears should live in to high-profile Pakistan stakeholders (ministers, landlords, and religious leaders).
This 5-year old male bear named Hope was brought to the Balkasar sanctuary in early September 2017 in very poor condition. He will be cared for in the Bioresource Research Center (BRC) until he is healthy enough to be released in the main sanctuary.
We aim to continue our relationship with these bears and inspire the movement to remove entertainment bears from intolerable living conditions.
We're planning to extend the sanctuary to help provide space for the remaining captive "dancing" and baiting bears in Pakistan.
