We put on a food truck that served plant-based chicken in New York for NYC Climate Week. Here’s what it looked like.

Did you check us out in Union Square, Manhattan at the end of September? If not, here’s what you missed.

This event was part of Climate Week NYC, hosted by the Climate Group and the UN in partnership with New York City and the COP26. The goal of Climate Week NYC is to come together to accelerate climate action and assess progress ahead of COP26 this month. A recent report from the United Nations International Panel on Climate Change shows the damaging impacts of methane, a greenhouse gas that’s 25-100 times more destructive than CO2 in a 20-year time frame. The single largest contributor to methane production around the world is livestock production. The billions of farmed animals we raise produce an unmanageable volume of waste, which is stored in pits prone to leaks or sprayed onto fields at outrageous rates, leading to contamination of vital water resources. This manure releases methane into the atmosphere as it breaks down. Methane from massive amounts of farmed animal manure is just one way the factory farming industry damages our climate.

The truck was part of our Meat Reduction campaign and served a plant-based dish to encourage visitors to #EatLessMeat. Our campaign was a good match with Climate Week NYC because of the effect that factory farming has on the environment. The land, food, and water used by factory farming contribute heavily to climate change and the destruction of valuable resources, especially agricultural land that could be used to produce food for the human population but instead grows resource-intensive crops for animal feed.

We served up a plant-based Daring chicken satay with spicy tropical salsa. By providing more options for meatless meals and making plant-based meat more readily available to the general public, we can reduce consumption of intensive animal protein and, in turn, help heal the planet.

The Communications and Programs teams were ready to go in our World Animal Protection-branded shirts and hats and evolve together masks.

We served up plant-based chicken and information about meat reduction, including the impact of factory farming on the environment and how eating less meat can help the planet.

We served hundreds of people over the course of just 4 hours. Let’s go, New York City!

The real MVPs were Juan and Miguel from Promobile Kitchen, who served up plant-based chicken satay all day with a smile on their faces. We all strove to imitate their energy all day!

A huge thank you to all the World Animal Protection employees, volunteers, and guests who came out to support the food truck. We couldn’t have done this event (or any of our events!) without you! Stay tuned for more animal welfare events coming to a city near you. Our next event happens on November 5th and 6th in Seattle. See you there!
