Becca the Cheetah (2014-2024)

Obituary

Becca, a 10-year-old cheetah, died at the Roger Williams Park Zoo in February due to a health condition.

Becca, a cheetah, died in February 2024 at the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Rhode Island after suffering from gastritis. Becca was transferred to the zoo in 2015 with her sisters, Abbey, Janga, and Johari, from Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Texas. Johari died from gastritis in 2022.

Cheetahs are the world’s fastest land mammal. In zoos, cheetahs live in enclosures or cages that are many times smaller than their natural habitat in Africa. Though Becca and her sisters were bred as part of a “conservation” program, cheetahs bred in US zoos will never be released into the wild. They are bred to be living attractions for zoo visitors.

World Animal Protection urges everyone who loves cheetahs and other big cats to avoid zoos and enjoy them in the wild or an accredited sanctuary.
