Most animals sold in pet stores aren’t puppies. Millions of small mammals (such as guinea pigs, hamsters, and gerbils), reptiles (such as bearded dragons and turtles), amphibians (frogs), birds, and fishes are bred in cruel mills or taken from the wild and sold at big box pet stores like PetSmart and Petco every year.
Many animals die before even reaching the store.
Download World Animal Protection’s publication, “Banning Retail Sales of Wild Animals: A Toolkit for Animal Advocates,” to learn how to advocate for a law prohibiting the sale of all animals in pet stores.
You’ll find everything you need to get started inside our toolkit, including:
- Factsheets for your local legislators broken down by topic area
- A guide to grassroots lobbying
- Ideas for engaging others in your community
We also have a one-page “policy concept” designed for legislators that quickly explains why communities need expanded retail pet sales bans.
