What is crypto? And why donate it?
A cryptocurrency is a digital form of money that is a more secure medium of exchange. The big idea is that because transactions are public, irreversible, mostly un-hackable, and controlled by the people, users and their digital finances are more protected.
When you donate crypto, you do not recognize capital gains from the donation and can deduct it from your taxes. In other words, donating your crypto can often reduce your tax burden.
Is my cryptocurrency donation tax deductible?
The IRS classifies cryptocurrencies as property, so cryptocurrency donations to 501(c)(3) charities receive the same tax treatment as stocks. Donating cryptocurrency is a non-taxable event, meaning you do not owe capital gains tax on the appreciated amount and can deduct it from your taxes. FYI–if you are looking for a more “green cryptocurrency” to process your donation in, Cardano is an option that uses a proof-of-stake (PoS) protocol instead of proof-of-work(PoW) like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Cardano’s founder estimates that it uses “less than 0.01% of the [energy] used by the Bitcoin network.”

Cryptocurrency donations are non-refundable. Please note that no goods, services, or airdrops are offered in exchange for cryptocurrency donations.
