Give From Your IRA

A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) is a direct transfer of money from your IRA provider, payable to a qualified charity. QCDs may be counted toward satisfying your required minimum distributions (RMDs) for the year. A gift of these assets can shield you or your heirs from taxes while helping to fund World Animal Protection’s life-saving work. Our free IRA-giving tool walks you through the process of making this gift.

Give from your IRA

QCD Requirements

  • You must be 70 ½ or older to donate a QCD.
  • The most an individual can donate in a calendar year across all charities is $105,000. If you file taxes jointly, your spouse can also donate up to $105,000 from their IRA.
  • QCDs can be made from IRAs, including traditional IRAs, rollover IRAs, and inherited IRAs.
  • Under certain circumstances, QCDs can be made from Roth IRAs. Please consult a qualified advisor to determine if you’re eligible.

Why QCDs?

Satisfy Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) Without Increasing Taxable Income

If you’re 73 or older, QCDs count toward satisfying your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) but are not considered taxable income—which helps reduce your adjusted gross income (AGI).

Lower Your Taxable Income and Reduce Medicare Premiums

Because QCDs are excluded from taxable income, they can potentially reduce the taxation of Social Security benefits and lower Medicare premiums.

Maximize Your Charitable Giving Without Itemizing

Since the QCD is excluded from income, it provides a tax benefit even if you don’t itemize deductions on your tax return This is particularly valuable for retirees who take the standard deduction instead of itemizing.

Avoid Estate Taxes on IRA Assets

Traditional IRAs are subject to income tax when inherited by non-spouse beneficiaries. Donating IRA assets to World Animal Protection reduces the tax burden on your heirs, allowing you to protect animals around the world while making a more tax-efficient estate plan.

Preserve Cash and Other Assets

Using a QCD allows you to make a meaningful gift to World Animal Protection without tapping into your cash reserves or other investments.
